Connecting private sector low-carbon investment to Europe’s competitiveness agenda, for Amazon

Shaping a new research report and narrative for Amazon that examines the scale and impact of its investments in low-carbon technologies in Europe for the first time.

The brief

To support EU and UK stakeholder and policy conversations on the need for greater investment in clean technologies and infrastructure, we developed independent research and a narrative that captured for the first time, the scale and impact of Amazon’s investments in low-carbon technologies across Europe.

The work

Together with economic consultancy Frontier Economics, we designed independent analysis of Amazon’s investments in three green sectors – renewable energy, transport electrification, and sustainable packaging innovation. The analysis demonstrated how these investments, totalling €17B since 2021, generated up to €11 billion in gross value added and created 144K jobs across Europe’s economies – in addition to creating new markets, providing demand certainty for further investment, accelerating deployment, de-risking investment and strengthening supply chains.

We created a narrative shift that moved consideration of Amazon’s ‘green’ investments purely in terms of Europe’s decarbonisation to how they support EU industry frameworks including the Competitiveness Compass and Clean Industrial Deal. By making this connection, we positioned Amazon – and large-scale private sector investment more broadly – as critical to Europe’s industrial modernisation and regional competitiveness.

A full-length report was launched in Brussels to an EU policy, stakeholder and industry audience, together with Amazon and partners, as part of a content and conference partnership with Euractiv. The launch was accompanied by targeted earned media, owned thought leadership and LinkedIn content for Amazon’s executive team.

Results

The analysis and resul ting report positions Amazon as a key partner to the EU’s industrial strategy and ambitions, enabling stronger, evidenced dialogue on the need for enabling policy frameworks, harmonised standards, implementation incentives and procurement that rewards innovation and sustainability. And it provides an ongoing evidence-based mechanism to support Amazon’s policy, industry and stakeholder conversations at both EU and market levels.
